As part of the Professional Learning Day on Tuesday, January 5th, over 300 CSD employees heard from representatives of the Decatur Farm to School Initiative and enjoyed a fabulous lunch of local food. Decatur Farm to School (F2S) is a grassroots effort to connect City Schools of Decatur with local farms with the objectives of serving healthy additions to school cafeteria meals, improving student nutrition and providing health and nutrition education opportunities that will last a lifetime. Scot Hollonbeck and Lucia Pawloski, parents and members of the original Decatur F2S efforts, spoke about the benefits of F2S, progress thus far, and plans for the future. Farm to School will build on efforts already in place at Decatur schools such as the school gardens at College Heights and the elementary schools, the LINKS program and the Oakhurst Community Garden Project’s work together on the Junior Master Gardener Program, and Decatur High’s community garden and organic gardening class. Some examples of future plans include gardening and nutrition education for students, incorporating local produce into school meals, and providing hands-on training for CSD teachers and nutrition staff. Finally, employees got a real taste (pun intended!) of the benefits of Farm to School. A delicious lunch made of local, organic ingredients was prepared and served by Avalon Catering, Allison Goodman and the CSD nutrition staff, and Dana Kinney and Decatur High Culinary Arts students. United Healthcare and the PTAs of Oakhurst, College Heights, Clairemont, Winnona?, and Renfroe were thanked for their donations to support the lunch. Decatur F2S is led by parents, teachers, school administrators, community members and local organizations. Partners include: Georgia Organics, the Oakhurst Community Garden Project, and the Decatur Education Foundation.
